Extra Space Storage rate increases: what renters report
This page collects public, linked reports from renters. We only include numbers stated in the original posts. We haven't verified them independently, and Extra Space has not commented to us.
Reported increase: $253 to $489 a month
A renter on r/selfstorage posted a thread titled "Extra Space raised my rent from $253 to $489 in months":
"Back in 2024, I was paying $253/month. Then it jumped to $335, then to $417 in June 2025, and then just one week later they tried billing me $489."
| Step | Monthly rent (as stated in the post) |
|---|---|
| 2024 | $253 |
| Next increase | $335 |
| June 2025 | $417 |
| About one week later | $489 (billed) |
That works out to about 93% above the 2024 rate, using the poster's own figures.
The wider pattern across chains
Extra Space isn't the only chain renters complain about. These reports are about other operators or don't name one, but they show the same intro-rate-then-increase pattern:
- A renter on X said their rent went up 53% while the same unit was advertised to new tenants for 29% less (facility not named).
- Another X user said a Public Storage unit went from $150 to $600 in 11 months.
- A renter in an r/sandiego thread titled "Storage increasing rate by 250% after 3 months" got replies recommending local independent facilities.
